Brown Estate

2021 Chaos Theory Red

Napa Valley

Brown Estate calls this wine its Cab lover's Zin, blending 60% Zinfandel with Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah. It is a stunner, sultry in juicy red plum, cassis, currant and earthy tobacco. Tannins are soft and leathery, and all the varieties are well represented. — Virginie Boone

Wine Maker’s Story

Siblings Deneen, Coral and David Brown

“We established the Brown Estate label officially in 1996 when we harvested what would become our first bottling of Brown Zin. In January 2000 we debuted our first three vintages at the annual ZAP (Zinfandel Advocates & Producers) Grand Tasting in San Francisco. Fast forward to August 2021… when we bottled our 25th vintage.

To make our wines and hospitality experience more accessible, in 2017 we opened our Brown Downtown tasting room in the heart of downtown Napa.”

France

La Fête du Rosé 2021

Côtes de Provence

The wine is ripe, full of red fruits. The smooth texture gives the wine its rich, full character. Drink this satisfying wine now. — Roger Voss

Wine Maker’s Story

Donae Burston

“As a long-time fan of rosé, I noticed a problem in the US: the category was being pigeonholed into a stereotype. Rosé was often marketed as a summertime beverage meant solely for women, and the associations with pink flowers felt limiting and outdated. In France, where I fell in love with the drink over a decade ago, rosé is enjoyed by all kinds of people at any time of the year. I wanted to bring that inclusivity and deliciousness to the United States by creating a Provence Rosé brand that defies stereotypes and invites everyone to enjoy it.”

For every bottle sold, proceeds are donated to various programs that provide travel opportunities to underserved and underrepresented youth.

Longevity

2018 Chardonnay

Livermore, California

This is the first offering of a California-label wine from Livermore Valley winemaker Phil Long, and it's a very good one. The medium-bodied wine offers buttery, toasted-oak aromas, mild flavors of pear, apple and vanilla bolstered by more oak spices, and a smooth, rather soft texture. Long blended in 13% Viognier. — Jim Gordon

Wine Maker’s Story

Phil Long

As president of the Association of African-American Vintners, Phil had no idea wine could be a career when he was younger. He was born in Washington, DC, grew up in Southern California and graduated from Cal Poly Pomona with a degree in architecture. Phil used his artistic skill to build a successful career in packaging and store display design before becoming a winemaker. Starting with the first Syrah he made in his garage in 2002, Phil’s approach to winemaking has been to continually challenge himself to make the best wines possible. He is passing that diligence on to his son, Phil Long, Jr., who now serves as Longevity’s assistant winemaker.

South Africa

Aslina

2020 Cabernet Sauvignon

Stellenbosch

The bouquet includes aromas of red berries and thyme. Nice acidity lifts raspberry flavors and adds freshness to the smooth palate. It has just enough oak spice and herbs to keep the wine balanced and enjoyable until the last drop. — Jesica Vargas

Wine Maker’s Story

Ntsiki Biyela

As South Africa’s first black woman vintner, Ntsiki grew up in a rural village in KwaZulu-Natal, and spent a year as a domestic worker before she was awarded a scholarship to study winemaking at Stellenbosch University in 1999 where she earned a bachelor’s degree in science in Agriculture. She worked in a boutique winery before launching her own brand. Her beloved grandmother was the guiding light in her life, and so Ntsika named her brand after her - Aslina.

Italy

Lyons Private Reserve

Lambrusco

Emilia-Romagna

The bespoke wine is a semi-sparkling red with cherry and blackberry flavors. The brand recommends that you pair it with Northern Italian pastas or lasagna, grilled meat, or spicy foods.

Wine Maker’s Story

Chris Lyons

Tech entrepreneur Chris Lyons, a general partner at venture capital powerhouse Andreessen Horowitz in Silicon Valley, and a board member of The James Beard Foundation, is bringing back Lambrusco which was once very popular.

Lyons cites an encounter with a sparkling Australian shiraz that put him on the path. “It blew my mind! I had no idea that you could have red wine, sparkling wine and cold wine all at the same time. I was like, I need that!”

Lyons wants his wine, “to be associated with celebration; I want my brand to be part of that conversation.” Yet at the same time, he wants it to be an everyday luxury.

On the nose, this Cabernet Sauvignon teases notes of dark fruit and berries. On the palate, this wine tastes of black currant, artfully mixed with a tinge of dark berries.

The wine finishes with a light hint of vanilla and oak.

Wine Maker’s Story
